Stephanie Onusiriuka: Nigeria’s Olympic Gymnastics Hope
At just 14, Stephanie Ogechukwu Onusiriuka is fast becoming the face of Nigerian gymnastics and possibly the nation’s best chance of a first Olympic medal in the sport.
The teenage star dazzled at the National Youth Games in Asaba, scooping three gold medals in the beam, vault, and all-round events, alongside two silvers in the floor exercise and team category.
It was yet another commanding display, following her four-gold haul at last year’s Games.
Onusiriuka, who has trained in London to sharpen her skills, is already eyeing the World Championships, Commonwealth Games, and ultimately, the Olympics. But she admits she needs better support to reach her full potential.
“My dream is to represent Nigeria at the Olympics and bring home a medal,” she said after her victory. “I just need access to world-class facilities and private sector support to compete without intimidation.”
Her rising profile underscores the need for greater investment in grassroots sports beyond football and athletics. With her poise, power, and ambition, Stephanie could be the gymnast to finally put Nigeria on the Olympic gymnastics map.
