ECOWAS Wraps Up Humanitarian Mission In Guinea-Bissau, Supports 18,000 Beneficiaries
In West Africa, where extreme weather events are growing more frequent and fragile communities often face the hardest blows, humanitarian support has become more than relief. It is a lifeline for survival and resilience.
Recognising this, the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, has strengthened its commitment to Member States, ensuring that no one is left behind in the face of mounting challenges.
Concluding a five-day Monitoring and Evaluation mission in Guinea-Bissau on 5 September 2025, ECOWAS reaffirmed this promise by assessing ongoing humanitarian operations and introducing new tools to boost accountability and regional coordination.
ECOWAS, reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening resilience against climate shocks and safeguarding vulnerable populations.
Operating under the theme “Build Back Better and Leave No One Behind,” the mission provided food and non-food assistance to 18,000 people, 70% women and 30% men.
It also delivered disaster management equipment, supported capacity-building for Guinea-Bissau’s disaster agency, and rolled out a new digital monitoring tool designed to improve real-time data sharing, evidence-based decision-making, and regional coordination.
During the mission, the ECOWAS delegation paid courtesy visits to the Minister of Interior and Public Order, Aladje Botche Candé, and the ECOWAS Resident Representative, Ambassador Ngozi Ukaeji, to brief them on the progress made and strengthen collaboration with national authorities.
ECOWAS stressed that its humanitarian operations remain central to protecting lives and building resilience across the region.
