NUJ FCT Demands Public Apology From NRC MD For Harassing Its Member, Bala
Harassment and intimidation of journalists remain a troubling trend in Nigeria, often threatening press freedom and undermining democracy.
The latest incident involves the Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), Mr. Kayode Opeifa, who allegedly verbally assaulted and obstructed Comrade Ladi Bala, former NAWOJ President and NTA transport reporter, while she was covering the recent Abuja-Kaduna train derailment.
According to witnesses, Opeifa hurled insults such as “stupid,” “foolish woman,” “useless” and even mocked Bala’s appearance and professionalism, before ordering security to remove her from the scene and threatening to block her from covering NRC events.
The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) FCT Council has strongly condemned the act, describing it as “a blatant violation of press freedom and human dignity.”
In a statement signed by its Secretary, Comrade Jide Oyekunle, the Council demanded an immediate and unreserved public apology from Opeifa, stressing that such intimidation of journalists—especially women—will not be tolerated.
The NUJ further warned that the incident reflects the growing hostility of public officials towards media scrutiny and vowed to pursue all necessary channels to ensure accountability and protection for journalists.
“This is an affront to democracy and the rule of law,” the statement read, calling on the NRC and relevant authorities to guarantee a safe and respectful working environment for media practitioners.
