NYSC Under Fire For Withholding Youth Corper’s Certificate Over Criticism Of Government
Human rights group, Global Rights, has condemned the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) for refusing to release the certificate of Ms. Rita Ushie Uguamaye despite her completing her one-year mandatory service.
The organisation described the move as a dangerous attack on free expression, alleging it stems from Ms. Uguamaye’s earlier criticism of the Tinubu administration on social media a stance that had already earned her an extra two months of service.
“This is a deeply troubling escalation,” said Damilola Decker, Programme Officer at Global Rights, warning that silencing dissenting young voices undermines democracy and further alienates Nigeria’s youth, who make up 65% of the population.
The group called for the immediate release of her certificate and urged the
government to stop blacklisting her or blocking future employment opportunities, adding that such actions risk earning the administration “its own certificate for authoritarianism.”
