Tinubu Honours Super Falcons With National Awards, Cash and Housing For WAFCON Triumph
The National Sports Commission (NSC) has showered praise on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his generous recognition of the Super Falcons’ remarkable performance at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), where they clinched a record-breaking 10th title.
President Tinubu’s gesture includes $100,000 for each player, $50,000 for every technical and backroom staff member, a three-bedroom flat in Abuja’s Renewed Hope Housing Estate, and the conferment of national honours Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON), on all team members.
The Falcons stunned hosts Morocco with a dramatic comeback in Rabat, turning a two-goal deficit into a 3-2 victory in the final.
Their triumph not only cemented Nigeria’s dominance in women’s football on the continent but also reignited national pride.
NSC Chairman, Mallam Shehu Dikko, hailed the President for what he called “visionary leadership,” noting that sports in Nigeria are enjoying renewed direction under Tinubu’s administration.
“President Tinubu rewards excellence and has consistently shown that he values sports as a key unifying force,” Dikko stated.
Director General of the NSC, Hon. Bukola Olopade, described the moment as a “turning point for Nigerian sports,” highlighting other ongoing successes, including the women’s basketball team defending their AfroBasket title in Côte d’Ivoire and young athletes competing in the inaugural African School Games in Algeria.
“This is a new dawn for Nigerian sports. We’re building from the grassroots and competing at the highest level,” Olopade said.
The NSC further applauded the President for clearing outstanding allowances owed to both the Super Eagles and the Super Falcons, calling him a leader who “truly loves sports.”
The Commission reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Nigerian athletes and thanked citizens for their continued encouragement.
