Nigeria Launches SPARC App To Curb Antibiotic Misuse, Tackle Antimicrobial Resistance
In a landmark move to curb the growing threat of drug-resistant infections, the Federal Government of Nigeria has unveiled the SPARC App a powerful digital tool aimed at transforming how antibiotics are prescribed across the country’s health sector.
The SPARC App, short for Surveillance and Prescribing Support for Antimicrobial Stewardship Resource Capacity Building, is designed to support doctors and pharmacists with evidence-based guidance to ensure antibiotics are used only when absolutely necessary.
It is part of a broader strategy to fight Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) a global health crisis that threatens the future of medicine by making once-treatable infections harder to cure.
Speaking at the national launch in Abuja, the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Ali Pate, described the app as “a weapon in our fight to protect lives and preserve the effectiveness of medicines.”
Represented by Director of Food and Drug Services, Pharm. (Mrs.) Olubunmi Aribeana, the Minister declared the app “Live in Nigeria,” urging all prescribers to adopt it immediately in their clinical routines.
Developed in partnership with the Commonwealth Pharmacists Association (CPA) and funded by the Fleming Fund, the SPARC App integrates Nigeria’s Standard Treatment Guidelines, including protocols for infectious diseases and COVID-19, with more updates, like veterinary antimicrobial use guidelines on the horizon.
Importantly, the app is exclusively for healthcare professionals and not for the general public. It offers a reliable, easy-to-use platform for rational antibiotic prescribing, thereby reducing treatment failures and drug-resistant infections.
Officials stressed that the initiative aligns with Nigeria’s second National Action Plan on AMR and positions the country as a leader in digital public health innovation across the continent.
As Nigeria joins 22 other Commonwealth nations already using the platform, stakeholders praised the move as a milestone in multisectoral collaboration between the health, environment, and livestock sectors.
“Today marks a bold step forward,” said Yakubu James, Nigeria’s SPARC App Champion. “This app represents our commitment to smarter prescribing, stronger health systems, and a safer future.”
