The 12th Chief of Naval Staff (CNS) National Swimming Championship kicked off with a splash on Wednesday, drawing cheers, medals, and rising stars to the Stephen Keshi Stadium in what has become one of Nigeria’s premier sporting showcases.
Postponed by a day out of respect for late former President Muhammadu Buhari, the opening ceremony was charged with national pride, with Navy officials and Aquatics Federation leaders reaffirming their commitment to youth empowerment and elite sports development.
“Swimming is not just a sport for us — it’s part of who we are in the Navy,” declared Rear Admiral Y.S. Idris, speaking on behalf of the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla. “We’re building a stronger, united Nigeria through events like this.”
Nigeria Aquatics Federation President, Chief (Mrs.) Chinonye Daphey-Aliyu, echoed the sentiment: “We’re grooming the next generation of champions right here. These athletes are potential Olympians and global competitors.”
Delta State Makes a Splash
Day Two of the championship was nothing short of electrifying. Delta State swimmers thrilled the home crowd with multiple gold medal finishes, led by young phenom Olise Endurance and the talented Oluwatofunmi Ibidapo, both bagging double victories in their age groups. Moboluwaro Obajolowo of Harmony Aqua and Odogbo Mirabel also shone in the junior categories.
The military categories saw fierce battles, with the Nigerian Army and Navy trading wins in freestyle and medley relays, while standout swimmers like Tebesia Nemune and Aduaye Blessing showed elite form.
Spotlight on the Future
With upcoming international events like the Youth Olympic Games in Senegal and the Junior Championships in Romania on the horizon, this year’s CNS Championship is not just about medals it’s about launching dreams.
As the competition continues, the energy in Asaba is electric. And for many of these young swimmers, the pool is more than just water — it’s the start of something big.
