INEC Strengthens Political Parties’ Capacity With Refresher Training On Nomination Portal
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Wednesday, 16 July 2025, held a refresher training workshop for political party officials to boost their capacity in using the INEC Candidate Nomination Portal (ICNP) a critical step in minimising errors and ensuring smoother candidate nominations ahead of forthcoming bye-elections and the FCT Area Council polls.
The two-day workshop, hosted at INEC Headquarters in Abuja, brought together party representatives from across the country, many of whom had earlier participated in similar sessions ahead of the 2023 general elections.
Welcoming participants, National Commissioner and Chairperson of the Legal Services, Clearance and Complaints Committee, Mrs May Agbamuche-Mbu, highlighted the importance of accurate and timely nominations. “Candidate nomination is not just a formality it is the foundation of every credible election,” she stressed, warning that errors in submissions could prove costly for both parties and their candidates.
Assistant Director, Legal Drafting and Clearance Department, Mr Samuel Omale, described the training as a strategic and timely intervention aimed at refreshing the knowledge of both old and newly appointed party officials.
Live demonstrations on the use of the ICNP formed part of the interactive sessions, allowing participants to better understand how to navigate the system effectively.
Common mistakes such as incomplete forms and improper document uploads were addressed, while the platform also gave room for open dialogue between INEC and political parties a move widely applauded by attendees.
The training was co-hosted by INEC’s Legal and ICT departments, both of which pledged ongoing support to political parties in the run-up to future elections.
As Mrs Agbamuche-Mbu aptly put it, “Our collective preparedness is essential for credible, inclusive, and seamless elections.”
