NCC Moves To Protect Telecom Infrastructure Under Tinubu’s Executive Order
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding telecom infrastructure across the country, following President Bola Tinubu’s Executive Order declaring such assets as Critical National Information Infrastructure (CNII).
Speaking during a courtesy visit by the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council, to the NCC headquarters in Abuja, the Commission’s Head of Public Affairs, Mrs Nnenna Ukoha, who represented the Executive Vice Chairman, Dr Aminu Maida, said the NCC is stepping up efforts to enforce the Executive Order signed on 24th June 2024.
The Order criminalises any damage or obstruction to telecom facilities—an urgent move to curb increasing vandalism, theft, and site access denial affecting network quality nationwide.
Ukoha outlined three major issues plaguing telecom operations: vandalism and theft of cables and generators, obstruction by communities and agencies, and road construction damage to fibre lines.
She stressed that protecting telecom assets is now a national duty.
On data concerns, she debunked the myth that networks steal users’ data, instead pointing to phone settings like auto-updates and hotspot sharing as common culprits.
She praised journalists for their public education efforts and called for deeper collaboration with the media on awareness campaigns, capacity building, and digital inclusion.
NUJ FCT Chairman, Comrade Grace Ike, lauded the NCC’s regulatory role and sought partnership for Press Week and other training opportunities.
The meeting reaffirmed the importance of joint action to ensure Nigerians enjoy seamless, secure, and affordable communication services.
