Lagos Catholics Set June 22 For Day Of Prayer Over Benue Killings
In a heartfelt response to the relentless violence plaguing parts of Nigeria, the Catholic Archdiocese of Lagos has declared Sunday, 22nd June 2025, as a special Day of Prayer for Peace and a solemn protest against the ongoing killings in Benue, Enugu, and other states.
The move follows the tragic events of 13th to 14th June, when dozens were massacred in their sleep in Yelewata, Benue State – many of them already displaced by previous attacks.
In a circular signed by Archbishop Alfred Adewale Martins, the Church expressed deep sorrow and righteous anger, condemning the continuous bloodshed and failure of security agencies to stem the tide.
“It is even more appalling that those already displaced were pursued and murdered in their places of refuge,” the statement read. “There is a need to reassure citizens that they are safe and secure wherever they live within the borders of our country.”
On the designated day, all Catholic priests in Lagos are to offer Masses specifically for peace, while lay faithful, religious congregations, and families are encouraged to pray the Rosary. Peaceful processions around church compounds will also be held in place of street protests.
The Archbishop also thanked Pope Leo XIV for spotlighting the crisis and urged the faithful to seek the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Queen of Peace.
With this spiritual campaign, the Lagos Archdiocese hopes to amplify the voices of the voiceless and call Nigeria’s leaders to urgent action.
