NAF Bolsters Peace Push In North Central, Deploys More Air Power Under Operation Whirl Stroke

In a fresh push to restore calm to the troubled North Central region, the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has ramped up its efforts by deploying additional air assets under Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS).

This move signals a renewed commitment to supporting ground forces and protecting communities plagued by banditry, kidnappings and communal clashes.

Air Marshal Hasan Bala Abubakar, the Chief of the Air Staff, visited Makurdi on Monday, 17 June, to personally assess the expanded air operations.

At a high-level strategy meeting held at the Tactical Air Command Headquarters, he was joined by other military top brass, including the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, and representatives from the Navy and OPWS command.

Air Marshal Abubakar revealed that the newly deployed aircraft are already making a difference, offering real-time intelligence, surveillance, and precision strikes. “Our aircraft have continued to conduct surveillance, armed reconnaissance, close air support, and precision strike missions with remarkable success,” he said.

He pointed to recent coordinated operations across Benue, Nasarawa, and Taraba States, which have disrupted militia strongholds and dismantled criminal hideouts. “These outcomes reinforce our unwavering commitment to protecting innocent lives and supporting national peace-building initiatives,” he added.

The Service Chiefs echoed the importance of teamwork among the Armed Forces, stressing that unity remains key to achieving lasting peace in the region. “As long as peace is threatened, our resolve remains unshaken,” said the Air Chief. “The Nigerian Air Force will continue to provide timely, decisive support in synergy with sister services.”

Residents across the North Central region will be hoping these efforts mark a turning point in the fight to reclaim their communities from fear and violence.
