Lassa Fever Cases Climb In Nigeria As Fatality Rate Rises — NCDC Sounds Alarm

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has reported a worrying rise in Lassa fever infections, with 11 new confirmed cases recorded in Week 23 alone spanning 2nd to 8th June 2025.

According to the latest situation report, fresh cases emerged in Ondo, Edo, Bauchi, and Taraba states, pushing the year’s total to 758 confirmed cases and 143 deaths.

The current Case Fatality Rate (CFR) stands at 18.9%, a noticeable increase compared to 17.8% during the same period in 2024.

Alarmingly, 90% of all confirmed cases this year have been reported from just five states: Ondo, Bauchi, Edo, Taraba, and Ebonyi, signalling persistent hotspots of infection.

Health experts continue to urge the public to stay alert and take preventive measures seriously, especially in high-risk areas.

The NCDC is also calling on journalists, public health advocates, and institutions to help amplify this information to reduce the spread and save lives.

For more detailed data and insights, the full report is available on the NCDC website.
