Nigeria Rising: Minister Tells Forbes Bold Reforms Are Restoring Global Respect and Economic Confidence

As Nigeria celebrates 26 years of uninterrupted democracy, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, says the country is firmly on the path of economic renewal and reclaiming its place on the global stage.

Speaking in an exclusive Forbes Africa interview to mark Democracy Day, the Minister praised President Bola Tinubu’s sweeping economic reforms — notably the removal of fuel subsidies and the unification of exchange rates — describing them as “difficult but necessary” moves to secure Nigeria’s future.

“They caused some turbulence, but like an aircraft taking off, we are now reaching stability,” Idris said. “The World Bank has noted our return to growth levels not seen in over a decade.”

He emphasised that the Tinubu administration is reinvesting savings from the fuel subsidy removal into large-scale infrastructure projects, including over 1,700 kilometres of highway corridors to stimulate commerce and reconnect communities.

“The aim is not just connectivity, but economic opportunity,” he explained.

According to Idris, these efforts are beginning to pay off: Nigeria is regaining global respect and investor confidence, driven by a commitment to transparency, democratic consolidation, and inclusive development.

“Under the Renewed Hope Agenda, we are laying a new foundation — not just with figures and forecasts — but with policies that empower people and build lasting institutions,” the Minister added.

Democracy Day, he noted, offers both a time to celebrate and to reflect on Nigeria’s journey and the road still ahead.
