Africa Day: 7 In 10 Africans Demand Greater Say In Global Decision-Making – Afrobarometer

As Africa marks Africa Day, new findings from Afrobarometer reveal that an overwhelming majority of Africans believe their countries deserve a stronger voice in international decision-making bodies such as the United Nations.

The survey, conducted across 30 African countries, shows that 71% of citizens want greater influence for the continent on the global stage.

Strong support was recorded in Tunisia (57%) and Senegal (54%), where citizens “strongly agreed” with the need for increased African representation.

The data also show that most Africans believe their interests are fairly represented within the African Union (AU) and their regional economic communities, such as ECOWAS, SADC, and EAC.

Over half (55%) view the AU’s economic and political influence as positive, with particularly high approval ratings in Liberia (79%), Mauritania (69%), and Côte d’Ivoire (68%).

While many Africans view China’s influence most favourably (60%), positive perceptions also outweigh negative ones for the United States (53%), the EU (49%), and former colonial powers (41%).

However, a sizeable portion of respondents remain undecided, with up to 42% not expressing a view on India’s role.

The findings underscore the growing demand for equitable global representation and highlight Africa’s increasing awareness of its geopolitical standing.

Afrobarometer, a trusted pan-African research network, continues to track public opinion across the continent, ensuring African voices are heard on the issues that matter most.
