NAWOJ FCT, FMC Jabi Offer Free Breast Cancer Screening To Female Journalists

In a bid to prioritise women’s health, the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Jabi, in collaboration with the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), FCT Chapter, has provided free breast cancer screening to 100 female journalists in Abuja.

The initiative, spearheaded by the Bassey Ita-Ikpang-led NAWOJ FCT executive, aimed to promote early detection and timely treatment of breast-related illnesses among women working in the media, a group often constrained by high-pressure schedules and limited access to routine health checks.

The screening featured Thermalytics breast scans and mammograms for women aged 40 and above, while younger participants received ultrasound scans alongside Thermalytics assessments all at no cost.

Speaking during the outreach, NAWOJ FCT Chairperson, Comrade Bassey Ita-Ikpang, expressed deep appreciation to FMC Jabi for its support.

She emphasised that the partnership highlights the importance of collective efforts in closing healthcare gaps.

According to her, this gesture is not just about healthcare; it is a testament to the value placed on the wellbeing of women who dedicate their lives to informing and educating society and described the initiative as “life-saving.”

Beneficiaries, including Josie Mudasiru, Princess-Ekwi Ajide, and Remi Uduak Eyen, praised the initiative saying it came at the perfect time and has given them peace of mind.

Medical Laboratory Scientist and Technical Access Manager for West Africa (Anglophone), Mr Jamiu Olabamiji, stressed the need for regular screenings. “Breast cancer is a leading killer, but early detection saves lives.

He urged philanthropists and First Ladies to support free cancer screening initiatives nationwide.

The outreach marks a significant step in safeguarding the health of female journalists and reinforces the power of partnerships in delivering impact-driven healthcare interventions.
