Innovation, Not Resources, Key To National Prosperity – Minister Nnaji

Nigeria’s Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Chief Uche Geoffrey Nnaji, has emphasised that modern prosperity is no longer driven by raw materials, but by the power of ideas, research, and innovation.

Speaking at the 22nd National Council on Innovation, Science and Technology (NCIST) in Abuja, Chief Nnaji stated that countries rising on the global stage are those investing in intellectual capacity, cutting-edge research, and local innovation not merely relying on natural resources.

“The theme of this year’s Council, ‘Research, Develop, Innovate and Commercialise: A Circle for National Prosperity’, truly captures the essence of a knowledge-driven economy,” he said. “We must bridge the gap between research and application to build a nation powered by practical solutions and forward-thinking science.”

He stressed the importance of creating a robust innovation ecosystem that connects researchers, industry, and policymakers, driving national development through Science, Technology and Innovation (STI).

Chair of the Senate Committee on Innovation, Science and Technology, Senator Aminu Iya Abbass, reiterated that no country has developed without embracing technology across all sectors.

He assured the Ministry and its agencies of the National Assembly’s full support.

In a goodwill message, Hon. Zakariya Tijjani Zannah, represented by committee deputy clerk Ukachukwu Chidiebere, called for sustained commitment to policies that embed innovation into every fabric of the Nigerian economy.

Representing the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Dr Mbaeri Maurice Nnamdi highlighted that national growth must be rooted in knowledge and creativity capable of industrial transformation and improving lives.

Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mrs Esuabana Nko-Asanye, noted that the summit serves as a rallying point for collaboration across public, private, academic, and civil society sectors.

She stressed the need for collective action to tackle issues like unemployment, climate change, and insecurity.

Also speaking, Cuban Ambassador Niriam Morales Palmero expressed her country’s interest in partnering with Nigeria in biotechnology, medicine, and scientific research, areas where Cuba has made significant strides.

The gathering marked a renewed commitment to positioning Nigeria as a knowledge-driven, innovation-led economy.
