The Abuja Metropolitan Management Council (AMMC) is set to collaborate with the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council, to drive infrastructural development in the nation’s capital.

This was the highlight of a courtesy visit on Tuesday by the NUJ FCT Chairperson, Ms Grace Ike, and her executive members to the AMMC Coordinator, Chief Felix Amechi Obuah.

Welcoming the delegation, Chief Obuah acknowledged the media’s pivotal role in public sensitisation, particularly in helping ensure compliance with the FCT master plan.

He pledged AMMC’s commitment to working closely with the NUJ, describing the partnership as a pathway to mutual growth and public enlightenment

“In partnering together, we support each other and grow together,” he said. “We must educate the public to attain infrastructural development in line with the master plan of the capital city.”

While noting current financial constraints, Obuah expressed willingness to consider NUJ’s requests in future budget cycles.

He urged the council to submit a formal proposal which he promised to escalate to the Honourable Minister of the FCT.

He also congratulated Ms Ike on her historic emergence as the first female Chairperson of the NUJ FCT, praying for a successful tenure.

In her remarks, Ms Ike lauded the AMMC for its efforts in municipal management and worker welfare, noting that such commitment recently earned Obuah a “Workers’ Advocate of the Year” award.

She appealed for AMMC’s support in tackling pressing infrastructural challenges faced by the NUJ FCT, including the completion of its Pentagon building, expansion of its congress hall, and the development of a proposed “Journalists’ Village” to provide affordable housing and professional spaces for media practitioners.

“With AMMC’s collaboration, we believe we can bring this vision to life,” she said. “A Journalists’ Village will uplift our profession, offering dignity, stability and growth opportunities to journalists who serve the public interest.”

The meeting ended on a hopeful note, with both parties optimistic about a strengthened partnership that supports development in the FCT.
