Securing the Future: ACA-USA Transforms Awkuzu Community School With N59.5 Million Perimeter Fencing Project

The once symbol of promise, Awkuzu Community School, formerly Boys’ Secondary School Awkuzu stood exposed for nearly five decades, vulnerable to encroachment, grazing herds, and vandalism.
But all that changed on Thursday, 24th April 2025, when the Awkuzu Cultural Association (ACA)-USA completed and handed over a 2.2-square-kilometre perimeter fencing project, finally securing the school’s vast land.
The school established in 1976, had long suffered from neglect and dwindling enrolment as its open premises became a haven for trespassers.
Previous attempts to fence the school, including through the Community Choose Your Project initiative during Governor Willie Obiano’s administration, fell short due to limited funding.
Now, thanks to a generous intervention from ACA-USA, the umbrella body of Awkuzu indigenes in the United States, the school’s future looks brighter.
With an investment of N59.5 million, the group not only fortified the school against external threats but also restored community confidence and pride in the institution.
ACA-USA is no stranger to impactful projects as it had in the past, donated an imaging and X-ray machine to CMC Awkuzu, and with their next convention slated for July 2025 in Ohio, another community-focused project is on the horizon.
The symbolic handover was attended by key dignitaries including the President General of Awkuzu, Dr Ejike Ogoegbunam; Project Supervisor, Chief Hon. Chris Uzoechina; Sir Steve Nweke of Stenez Technical Services Ltd; as well as Igwe Charles Anikweze’s media representative, Mr Ozor Oduche.
The people of Awkuzu are profoundly grateful to ACA-USA and its leadership, President Chief Obum Billy Okoye, Vice President Bishop Cyril Nwoye, and Hon. Uzoechina for once again proving that when the diaspora unites with purpose, transformation is inevitable.
