In a landmark stride for gender inclusion in Nigeria’s military, the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has officially absorbed its first set of Ex-Junior Air Women (Ex-JAWs) into active service as Airwomen, a historic moment that shatters a long-standing gender barrier.

Previously open only to male graduates of the Air Force Military School (AFMS), known as Ex-Junior Air Men (Ex-JAMs), the NAF’s Absorption Policy has now been extended to include female graduates of the Air Force Girls’ Military School (AFGMS).

The trailblazing beneficiaries are members of the AFGMS Class of 2017, who completed their military training at NAF Base, Kaduna, and have now been fully inducted into the force.

Describing the development as a “moment of triumph,” Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Hasan Bala Abubakar, hailed it as a bold step towards equal opportunity and empowerment for women in uniform. “This move reaffirms our commitment to recognizing potential, not gender,” he stated.

With more than 3,500 AFGMS graduates in the past 39 years, the school has produced trailblazers across sectors. Now, its alumni are taking their place in the skies not just making history, but charting a bold course for the future of the Nigerian Air Force.

This move creates jobs, just as it creates a legacy.
