Enugu LG Boss Clears Forests, Sets Up Farm Protection Squad To Tackle Insecurity
In a bold move to curb rising insecurity, the Executive Chairman of Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area in Enugu State, Bar. Chijioke Ezugwu, has embarked on a massive forest-clearing exercise along major roads notorious for ambushes by criminals.
The clearance, according to his media adviser, Chief Kingsley Onyeji, is part of a comprehensive security strategy aimed at eliminating hiding spots for kidnappers and improving safety for commuters, especially along routes like Ezukolo, Abbi, Nrobo, and Nimbo roads.
In a further bid to protect farmers and rural communities, the council boss has also launched a Community Farm Protection Squad, tasked with safeguarding farmlands and ensuring farmers can work without fear.
A rapid response team has also been created within the neighbourhood watch, equipped with vehicles and modern communication gadgets to swiftly respond to emergencies — from attacks to road accidents.
Bar. Ezugwu also warned traditional rulers in the area against illegal land transactions with foreigners, whom he claimed often exploit such deals to infiltrate and terrorise communities.
He vowed to take firm action against any ruler found complicit.
Since assuming office, the chairman has rolled out several security measures aimed at restoring peace to Uzo-Uwani, including restructuring the local watch groups, improving intelligence gathering, and deepening collaboration with formal security agencies.
