ECOWAS Commission Gears Up For 50th Anniversary With Strong Backing From Nigeria

The Vice President of the ECOWAS Commission, Mrs. Damtien L. Tchintchibidja, had met with Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Chair of the ECOWAS Council of Ministers, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, in Abuja to push forward preparations for ECOWAS’ landmark 50th anniversary.
During the strategic meeting at the Ministry’s headquarters, Mrs. Tchintchibidja unveiled a lineup of regional programmes leading to the grand celebration scheduled for May 28, 2025, in Lagos, with Nigeria set to play a central role.
She emphasised that the golden jubilee is not only a time to celebrate ECOWAS’ strides over five decades but also a key moment for introspection and recommitment to better serving citizens across West Africa.
She called for Nigeria’s active participation, particularly the Ministry’s involvement in the technical and planning committee overseeing the commemorations.
Ambassador Tuggar on his part, pledged Nigeria’s full support, assuring that the anniversary would be inclusive, youth-centered, and impactful. “Nigeria remains committed to making the 50th anniversary of ECOWAS a truly historic celebration for the region,” he stated.
