NUJ FCT To Wike: Rescue Our Crumbling Secretariat, Tackle Soaring Living Costs

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council, has made a passionate appeal to the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, urging him to intervene in the deplorable state of its Secretariat in Utako, Abuja.

At its second Congress held on Saturday, April 12, 2025, the Council described the facility as unbefitting for journalists operating in the nation’s capital, calling on the Minister, fondly known as “Mr. Project” to replicate his developmental strides at the Secretariat and fast-track the completion of the long-abandoned NUJ Pentagon project.

“We are earnestly appealing to the Honourable Minister to tour the facility and witness the decay firsthand,” the Congress resolved, expressing hope that Wike’s leadership could turn the Secretariat into a legacy structure.

Beyond infrastructure, the Congress also raised alarms over harsh living conditions in the FCT.

Members decried incessant power outages blamed on the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC), the skyrocketing cost of data and telecom services, and the rising maternal mortality rate linked to economic hardship.

The Union urged the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to regulate telecom tariffs and called on the Federal Government to make maternal healthcare services free, to ease the burden on expectant mothers.

Reaffirming its dedication to journalism and public welfare, the NUJ FCT vowed to sustain advocacy for better living standards and working conditions for its members.
