In a country where unlawful detentions have long strained police-community relations, Nigeria’s police chief is taking a bold step to change the narrative.

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, has issued a strong warning to police officers nationwide against incessant and illegal detentions, stressing that such actions violate citizens’ fundamental rights and erode public trust.

Citing Sections 34 and 35 of the Nigerian Constitution, which safeguard the rights to dignity and personal liberty, the IGP reminded officers that detaining individuals beyond the lawful timeframe is not just a breach of duty, but a breach of human rights.

“The era of prolonged and unjustified detentions must end,” the IGP declared, urging personnel to embrace accountability and uphold the rule of law.

He warned that violators will face serious disciplinary actions.

The IGP emphasised that the Force’s commitment to human rights is key to fostering stronger ties with the communities they serve. “We must police with integrity and respect,” he said.

This renewed focus comes as part of broader police reforms aimed at balancing effective law enforcement with the protection of individual freedoms.

The Nigeria Police Force reiterated its pledge to ensure that all detainees are treated humanely and in accordance with the law, as it works towards building a rights-respecting policing culture across the country.
