Addressing environmental restoration and social development requires more than policies but also demands action, collaboration, and unwavering commitment.

Rivers State, a region long impacted by hydrocarbon pollution, efforts to rebuild livelihoods and restore ecosystems are gaining momentum.

The United Nations Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria, Mohamed Fall, embarked on a two-day official visit to the state, starting with a crucial engagement at the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP) office in Port Harcourt.

Fall was welcomed and briefed by the Project Coordinator Professor Nenibarini Zabbey, Fall on progress and challenges in restoring mangroves, shorelines, and livelihoods in Ogoni communities.

“It’s always a good feeling to engage with UN staff in the field,” Fall remarked, acknowledging the sacrifices and commitment of the UN team working under challenging conditions.

He encouraged them to intensify their support for Nigeria’s government in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

His visit also included discussions with representatives of 21 Civil Society Organisations, (CSOs), where he was particularly impressed by the strong presence of women-led groups.

Gender equality, gender-based violence (GBV), the rights of people living with HIV (PLHIV), and agricultural development formed the key topics.
