Federal Government Celebrates Young Nigerian Scientists At Ninth YONSPA

In a rapidly evolving world where science and technology shape economies, Nigeria is making strategic investments in its young minds.
The Federal Ministry of Innovation, Science, and Technology recognising the role of innovation in national development, has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting young scientists through skill development and competitive platforms.
At the presentation of results for the 9th edition of the 774 Young Nigerian Scientist Presidential Award (YONSPA) in Abuja, the Permanent Secretary of FMIST, Mrs. Esuabana Nko Asanye, stressed the Ministry’s dedication to building a robust Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI) ecosystem.
The Permanent Secretary who was represented by the Director of Human Resource, Mallam Hassan Baba Ibrahim, highlighted YONSPA’s goal of inspiring students to apply scientific knowledge to real-world challenges, to ultimately drive Nigeria’s socio-economic growth.
The initiative, spanning all 36 states and the 774 local government areas, identifies and rewards exceptional secondary school students in Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Physics.
Winners receive a presidential handshake, cash prizes, and scholarships to further their education at Nigerian universities.
The Director of the Science and Technology Promotion Department, Mr. Ronald Ukpong, noted the importance of STEM education in securing Nigeria’s place in the global scientific community, while, the Chief Examiner, Professor Uno-Uno commended the participants’ improved performance, urging teachers to adopt innovative teaching methods for even greater success.
As Nigeria harnesses the potential of its youth in science and technology programmes, like YONSPA stand as a beacon of hope, ensuring that the nation remains competitive in an innovation-driven world.
