As Nigeria joins the rest of the world to mark World Radio Day 2025, the spotlight is on the theme “Radio and Climate Change.”

The day, set aside by UNESCO, underscores the crucial role radio plays in educating and mobilising communities against the growing climate crisis.

Radio has long been a trusted source of information, particularly in times of crisis. Now, as climate change threatens livelihoods and ecosystems, its influence is more vital than ever.

With its wide reach, radio serves as a powerful tool to raise awareness, inspire action, and drive policy discussions on environmental sustainability.

Speaking at COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu emphasised Nigeria’s vulnerability to climate change and outlined strategies to mitigate its impact.

His administration’s commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and integrating climate solutions into national planning aligns with the urgent need for public engagement—an area where radio can make a significant impact.

On this occasion, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, called on Nigerian radio stations to use their platforms to educate the public about climate change.

He urged broadcasters to feature expert discussions, provide accurate information, and encourage sustainable practices such as reducing plastic waste, conserving energy, and promoting eco-friendly habits.

As the world battles climate change, radio remains a critical ally in the fight.

By leveraging its influence, Nigeria can empower its citizens to take action and build a more resilient future.

Happy World Radio Day!
