Imo State Launches Anti-Drug Campaign In Schools
In a move to protect the future of its youths, the Imo State Government has launched an aggressive campaign against illicit drug use in schools.
Partnering with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and law enforcement agencies, the initiative aims to curb substance abuse among students and safeguard their well-being.
Leading the campaign, Special Adviser to Governor Hope Uzodimma on Narcotics and Illicit Drugs Monitoring, Chief Ezechukwu Obonna, visited Imo City Secondary School and Emmanuel College, Owerri, where students received first-hand education on the dangers of drug abuse.
“We are taking this fight beyond schools—we are engaging traditional rulers, youth leaders, and community heads to track and report drug peddlers,” Obonna stated. “Reducing supply will ultimately lower demand.”
With global drug abuse affecting millions, Nigeria remains a hotspot, with an estimated 50 million users.
The campaign seeks to reverse this trend by raising awareness and strengthening community involvement.
Students who attended the sensitisation programme expressed renewed commitment to staying drug-free.
“I now understand how dangerous drugs are. I will spread this message to my friends,” said a student, Jonas Victor.
Another participant, Adaeze Nnadimma, emphasised the long-term impact: “If we engage in drug abuse, we might not live to achieve our dreams.”
The Imo State Government remains steadfast in its mission to build a healthier, drug-free society, ensuring that the leaders of tomorrow are not lost to substance abuse.
