The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) took center stage during a high-level session of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on January 21, 2025, focusing on “African-led and Development-focused Counter-terrorism Initiatives.”

ECOWAS Permanent Observer to the UN, Ambassador Kinza Jawara-Njai, represented the ECOWAS Commission President, Dr. Omar Touray, and outlined the regional body’s strategic approach to countering terrorism in West Africa.

She highlighted the adoption of the ECOWAS Action Plan for the Eradication of Terrorism, the deployment of the ECOWAS Standby Force, and the integration of kinetic measures into intervention strategies.

The session, held under Algeria’s presidency, emphasised the importance of aligning counter-terrorism efforts with socio-economic development to create lasting solutions.

ECOWAS’s advocacy for African-led strategies underscores its commitment to addressing terrorism while fostering stability and growth in the region.
