Nigeria Police Force has announced February 1, 2025, as the start date for the enforcement of third-party vehicle insurance laws nationwide.

This was revealed during a meeting between the InspectorGeneral of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and the Commissioner for Insurance, Olusegun Omosehin, at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.

The Commissioner, accompanied by top officials from the National Insurance Commission (NAICOM), commended the IGP for his strides in police reforms, including the establishment of the Police Insurance Bank Limited.

Mr Omosehin sought police collaboration to ensure compliance with mandatory insurance policies, which he noted are vital for protecting road users.

Responding, the IGP stressed that it is a legal requirement for all vehicle owners to obtain third-party insurance under Section 68 of the Insurance Act and Section 312 of the 1945 Motor Vehicle Act.

He urged Nigerians to comply, warning that violations could result in fines, imprisonment, or both.

This enforcement is in line with the police’s commitment to safeguarding life and property, as well as strengthening inter-agency collaboration for public safety.

Vehicle owners are as such encouraged to regularise their insurance status before the enforcement date to avoid penalties.
