NUJ FCT Council Mourns the Sudden Passing of Former Secretary Rafat Idris

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) FCT Council has been thrown into mourning following the sudden demise of its former Secretary, Mrs. Rafat Idris, a stalwart of journalism and a cherished figure in the media community.
Mrs. Idris passed away in the early hours of Friday, December 20, 2024, in Abuja, after a brief illness, leaving behind a legacy of dedication and service to the journalism profession.
In a heartfelt statement, the Council’s Secretary, Comrade Jide Oyekunle, described her passing as a devastating loss to the Union and the media industry at large.
“The NUJ FCT Council received the news of Mrs. Rafat Idris’ sudden death with immense shock and disbelief,” the statement read. “Rafat was a quintessential journalist, a true asset to the profession, and a steadfast member of the Union who served with unwavering dedication and commitment.”
Oyekunle highlighted Mrs. Idris’ impactful contributions, calling her a peace-loving and approachable leader who left an indelible mark. “She was not just a remarkable leader but also a cherished friend to many. Her passion for professionalism and excellence will always be remembered.”
Mrs. Idris, who was the Assistant Director of Digital Media at Voice of Nigeria (VON), had an illustrious career. She previously served as the Assistant Secretary of the International Press Institute (IPI) Nigeria and was recently re-elected as the Institute’s Treasurer.
Beyond her professional achievements, she was the founder of the Okenite Foundation for Special Needs Children and a committed media personality at Habbabiya.
Hailing from Ihima in the Okene Local Government Area of Kogi State, Mrs. Idris was a beacon of inspiration to many. She is survived by three children, leaving behind a legacy of love, leadership, and advocacy.
She was buried yesterday, December 20, 2024, at the Gudu Cemetery in Abuja, in accordance with Islamic rites.
The NUJ FCT Council extends its deepest condolences to her family, colleagues at VON, the NUJ Voice of Nigeria Chapel, and the entire media community during this difficult time.
