FG, Bangladesh To Further Deepen Bilateral Relations After 50th Anniversary

Bangladesh and Nigeria are celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the Establishment of Diplomatic relations.

Both countries began their journey to independence almost around the same time, and have been bilateral partners for 50 years.

Speaking at the Bangladesh National Day and 53rd Independence Day in Abuja recently, the High Commissioner of Bangladesh to Nigeria, Masudur Rahman, lauded the good bilateral relations between Nigeria and Bangladesh.

The Envoy noted that both countries have collaborated deeply in the United Nations and international organizations, often sharing identical positions while strongly supporting each other.

He congratulated Bangladesh and Nigeria on what he termed “their journey on a global map as a peace-loving constructive player” while acknowledging the much-needed support Bangladesh received from Nigeria in being elected to the member of the UN HRC to the IMO and as well as in the post of Managing Director of the Common Fund for Commodities.

According to him, over the years, Bangladesh and Nigeria have deepened their cooperation in defence training, educational exchanges, and people to people exchanges

He further stated:”Our shared history, identical demographic dividend, and synergic diaspora would do much better, as our proactive diplomacy resonates with the four pillars of foreign policy of Nigeria-Democracy, Diplomacy, Demography and Diaspora.

The Envoy disclosed that President Tinubu’s letter to their Prime Minister on her election victory demonstrated the renewed commitment to forge ahead and diversify bilateral cooperation to the mutual benefit of the two countries.

Nigeria’ Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, represented by the Director of Asia Pacific, Ambassador Misitura Abdulrahim, extolled the diplomatic relationship between Nigeria and Bangladesh in the areas of education, defence, and cultural exchanges saying that Nigeria is ready to deepen cooperation with Bangladesh.

The Minister said, both countries had established bilateral consultation mechanism between their foreign ministries since 2021 and have been making concerted efforts to grow trade and economic relations since then, especially in areas such as textile development, cultural exchanges and to sustain military relations.

The event which was a showcase of cultures of both countries through dances and cuisine was attended by dignitaries, members of the Diplomatic Corps, leaders of Nigerian businesses, Academia, members of the Media, and Civil Society.
