The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission says it has not received any official notification from three of its member states, Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso, regarding their intention to leave.
In a statement responding to the surprise announcement broadcasted on Malian and Nigerien national television, claiming the withdrawal of the three countries from the regional bloc, the ECOWAS Commission raised concerns, but emphasised that it has not yet received any official notification to that effect.
The ECOWAS Commission, acting on the mandate of the Authority of Heads of State and Government, has been actively engaging with Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger in the effort to restore constitutional order.
According to the statement, the Commission maintains its stance that Burkina Faso, Niger, and Mali remain vital members of the Community despite the media announcement.
It said the Authority of Heads of State and Government remains committed to finding peaceful resolutions through dialogues and negotiations as the ECOWAS Commission continues to monitor the situation closely and will issue further updates as developments unfold.
This response highlights the regional body’s efforts to maintain stability and unity even in the face of uncertainty and potential discord within the West African bloc.
