Nigeria Is Not A Signatory Of The Samoa Agreement

The Federal Government of Nigeria has taken note of various statements and publications regarding the impact of Nigeria’s signing of the new Association Agreement between Members of the Organization of American, Caribbean and Pacific States, known as the Samoa Agreement. ) and the European Union (EU).

The Samoa Convention lists six (6) priority areas of fundamental human rights, democracy and governance; peace and security; human and social development; environmental sustainability and climate change; inclusive sustainable economic growth; and development, migration and mobility.

This agreement replaces the Cotonou Agreement (2000), which followed many other agreements aimed at strengthening relations between OACPS and the EU.

A statement signed by the spokesperson of the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mrs. Francisca Omayuli, informed the citizenry that Nigeria was not represented at the signing ceremony held in Samoa on Wednesday, November 15, 2023 and therefore, has not signed the Agreement.

She said relevant Nigerian stakeholders are currently working on the document to ensure that its provisions do not conflict with Nigerian domestic laws.
