Niger Republic coup leader, General Abdourahmane Tchiani has been given one hundred and sixty eight ((168) hours (one week) to restore ousted President Mohamed Bazoum to power or face military action.
Gen Abdourahmane Tchiani, who declared himself president, had ahead of West African leaders meeting warned them and unnamed Western nations against stepping in.
The Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, who gave this order, also imposed tough sanctions on Niger, including the closure of land and air borders, a freeze on the country’s assets, and the suspension of all economic and financial transactions.
ECOWAS through the ECOWAS Commission President Omar Toure, made it clear that it will not tolerate any attempt to derail the democratic process in the country, saying that if the Authority’s demands are not met within one week to restore constitutional order in Niger, ECOWAS will use all necessary means, including military force, to achieve its objective.
According to Toure, Mohammed Bazoum, remains the legitimate President of Niger Republic and ECOWAS would hold those behind the coup responsible for any violence that takes place in the country.
