...As New Senate President Backs Fuel Subsidy Removal

Senator Godswill Akpabio has been elected President of the 10th National Assembly.
He defeated his opponent and Zamfara West counterpart, Abdulaziz Yari, to clinch the keenly contested election.
Before the contest, Senator Ali Ndume nominated Akpabio while Senator Elisha Abbo nominated Yari.
Senator Tahir Mungono, who Yari’s nomination did not go down well with noted that Yari’s nomination was unconstitutional and this led to a rowdy session before the Clerk of the National Assembly calmed down the nerves.
After the election, Senator Akpabio was declared winner and the clerk of the national assembly, Sani Tambuwal, administered the oath of office on him.

In his acceptance speech as the President of the 10th Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Godswill Akpabio, assured President Bola Tinubu that the 10th Senate will work for the success of his government.
Akpabio also assured members of the 10th Senate that despite being the leader, he will continue to work with them and for them.
The newly elected President of the Senate also gave assurance that the national assembly under his leadership will give all necessary legislative backing to the removal of petrol subsidy by President Tinubu.
Despite the endorsement of Akpabio as Senate President by President Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC), he promised that the red chamber will not serve as a rubber stamp to the executive but will maintain its independence.
