For citizens seeking justice across West Africa, winning a case in court may mean little if the judgment is never enforced.

The President of the ECOWAS Court of Justice, Justice Charlyne Brumskine, has called for stronger institutional support to ensure that the court’s rulings are respected and implemented across the region.

Brumskine made the call during a working visit to the President of the ECOWAS Commission, General Birame Diop, at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja on 22 October 2026.

The visit focused on strengthening cooperation between the two institutions and addressing the need for effective implementation of the Community Court’s judgments.

The ECOWAS Court plays a key role in upholding community law and protecting the rights of citizens within its jurisdiction.

However, the effectiveness of its decisions depends significantly on the willingness and capacity of relevant authorities to enforce them.

Brumskine’s appeal highlights the importance of collective responsibility among ECOWAS institutions in ensuring that judicial decisions translate into practical outcomes for those seeking redress.

The meeting was attended by the Vice-President of the ECOWAS Commission, Anthony Oluwatosin Ogunjimi, and the Commissioner for Internal Services, Dr Kalilou Sylla.

Both institutions reaffirmed their commitment to stronger institutional cooperation, the rule of law and regional integration.

They also stressed that accessible justice and the effective enforcement of Community Court judgments are essential to building public trust and promoting good governance across West Africa.

The institutions said these priorities remain central to the realisation of the ECOWAS Vision 2050, which seeks to advance regional integration and improve the welfare of citizens.

For the regional bloc, the challenge extends beyond delivering judgments to ensuring that court decisions are implemented, so that access to justice produces meaningful results for the people it is meant to serve.
