Nigeria, Cyprus Seal Fresh Push For Stronger Ties

Nigerian students, businesses and professionals could benefit from stronger economic, educational and diplomatic links with Cyprus following the accreditation of Nigeria’s ambassador to the Mediterranean island nation.

Ambassador Nkechi Linda Ufochukwu formally presented her Letters of Credence to Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides at the Presidential Palace in Nicosia on Friday, marking the official start of her diplomatic assignment to Cyprus.

Ufochukwu, who also serves as Nigeria’s ambassador to Israel, conveyed the greetings of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and pledged to strengthen relations between both countries during her tenure.

President Christodoulides welcomed the Nigerian envoy and reaffirmed Cyprus’s commitment to deepening ties with Nigeria, citing their longstanding friendship, shared principles and connections between their peoples.

He also acknowledged Nigeria’s strategic role in West Africa and its contributions to regional dialogue, cooperation, integration and stability.

The Cypriot president said his government was ready to work with Nigeria to expand cooperation in key areas, including trade, investment, education, economic development and political dialogue.

The engagement offers an opportunity for both countries to turn diplomatic goodwill into practical benefits, particularly for businesses seeking new markets, students pursuing educational opportunities and professionals exploring cross-border partnerships.

For Nigeria, stronger relations with Cyprus could also create opportunities to attract investment and improve engagement with Nigerians living on the island.

The presentation of credentials formally authorises Ufochukwu to represent Nigeria in Cyprus and serve as an official channel of communication between the two governments.

She is expected to engage Cypriot government officials, business leaders and members of the Nigerian community as efforts begin to strengthen bilateral cooperation.

The ceremony was attended by senior Cypriot government officials and members of the Nigerian diplomatic mission.

Both countries have expressed a willingness to build on their existing friendship, with the focus now on translating renewed diplomatic goodwill into measurable gains in trade, education, investment and people-to-people relations.
