The leadership of West Africa’s regional court has changed hands, with Liberia’s Justice Charlyne M. Brumskine elected President and Benin’s Justice Désire Henri Aihou Vice-President of the ECOWAS Community Court of Justice.

The two justices were elected on 13 October 2026 by the newly constituted college of judges, ushering in a new judicial term for the regional institution responsible for upholding community law and addressing disputes within its jurisdiction.

Their election follows the conclusion of the tenure of the outgoing college of judges. The new leadership will oversee the Court’s judicial and institutional affairs under the four-year, non-renewable mandate ending in 2030.

Other members of the five-member Court are Justices Awa Bah of The Gambia, Henrietta Uzoamaka Didigu of Nigeria, and Yaouza Ouro-Sama of Togo.

The new leadership is expected to guide the Court in delivering its judicial responsibilities and advancing justice within the ECOWAS community.
