South-East Basketball Backs Abdullahi For NBBF Presidency
The South-East basketball community has thrown its weight behind Dr Mustapha Abdullahi in the race for the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) presidency, citing his grassroots development agenda and plans to improve infrastructure and talent development.
The South-East Basketball Association declared its support ahead of the October 15, 2026 NBBF election scheduled to hold at the International Conference Centre (ICC), Abuja.
The association said it arrived at the decision after considering the experience and programmes of the presidential candidates, adding that Abdullahi’s vision offered a strong platform for the growth of basketball in the region and across Nigeria.
South-East representative on the NBBF Board and vice-presidential candidate, Chief Ugo Udezue, said Abdullahi had the capacity to move Nigerian basketball to the next level.
Udezue said the region needed sustained investment in standard courts, youth and school competitions, stronger state and club leagues, as well as clear pathways for young players to progress into national teams and professional basketball.
“The South-East has always produced talent. Under Dr Abdullahi, that talent will be developed here at home,” Udezue said.
The Head Coach of Coal City Blazers, Chief Chiedozie Nwoye, and Chairman of the Imo State Basketball Association, Hon. Johnbosco Okeahialam, also endorsed Abdullahi’s candidacy, pledging to work with him to advance the sport in the region.
The association said other state basketball association chairmen in the South-East had similarly expressed support for Abdullahi.
It urged basketball stakeholders to carefully assess the programmes and vision of all candidates ahead of the election, while reaffirming its 100 per cent support for Abdullahi.
