NCC To Scale Digital Literacy Drive Through ITU-Recognised DBI
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) is set to leverage the Digital Bridge Institute’s (DBI) recognition as an International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Digital Transformation Centre to expand digital literacy and skills training across Nigeria.
The Commission said the partnership would help bridge the digital divide and equip more Nigerians, particularly underserved and vulnerable communities, with skills to participate meaningfully in the digital economy.
The NCC disclosed this in Abuja while receiving an ITU Senior Digital Skills Officer, Ms Robyn Fysh, who visited the Commission alongside a DBI delegation led by its President and Chief Executive Officer, Mr David Daser.
Representing the NCC Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Dr Aminu Maida, the Director of Research and Development, Engr Babagana Digima, described DBI’s ITU designation as a major opportunity to deepen collaboration among the NCC, DBI and ITU on digital inclusion.
He said the Commission would work with government agencies, state governments and development partners to widen access to digital skills training nationwide.
Fysh said the ITU’s Digital Transformation Centres initiative, launched in partnership with Cisco in 2019, had reached more than 870,000 people globally, with women accounting for more than half of beneficiaries.
Daser said DBI’s recognition would strengthen efforts to expand digital skills and certification opportunities, noting that the Institute had become the first institution globally to simultaneously hold ITU Academy Training Centre and Digital Transformation Centre status.
He said the initiative aligns with Nigeria’s National Digital Literacy Framework, which targets 95 per cent digital literacy by 2030.
The NCC said sustained investment and stronger partnerships would be critical to ensuring that communities currently excluded from digital opportunities are not left behind.
