NBBF Presidency: Ex-D’Tigers Star Ejike Ugboaja Pledges Basketball Rebuild
Nigerian basketball needs more than talented players to return to the top; it needs a system capable of turning talent into sustained international success.
That is the challenge former D’Tigers international and professional player, Ejike Christopher Ugboaja, says he is ready to tackle as he declares his intention to contest the presidency of the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF).
Ugboaja brings experience from both sides of the game.
He represented Nigeria at the 2012 Olympic Games and was selected by the Cleveland Cavaliers in the 2006 NBA Draft before playing professionally in the NBA G League, Europe and Asia.
Speaking to journalists in Abuja, he promised a more inclusive and development-focused federation, with stronger grassroots programmes, expanded coaching and training opportunities, better competitions and improved welfare for players and officials.
He also identified factionalism as one of the major obstacles to the growth of Nigerian basketball, pledging to reconcile rival groups and bring former NBBF leaders, players, coaches, clubs and other stakeholders together.
“I will deploy my experiences as a former Nigerian National player and NBA player, having starred in several countries of the universe. My record is my conviction that I will deliver as NBBF President,” Ugboaja said.
His foundation says more than 2,000 male and female players have benefited from its basketball development programme, including opportunities linked to education.
But the former international knows that playing experience alone will not fix Nigerian basketball.
Any new administration would have to address grassroots development, facilities, sports medicine, insurance, player remuneration, professional coaching, scouting and the strengthening of domestic leagues as pathways to elite careers.
Ugboaja’s ambition is ultimately to build a basketball structure that can consistently produce teams capable of competing for major African and global honours.
His candidacy now places the basketball community before a familiar but crucial question: can a former elite player translate international experience into the institutional reforms needed to rebuild Nigerian basketball?
