Prof May Nwoye: The Quiet Force Behind A Remarkable Legacy

Some people build reputations by seeking attention; others earn recognition through the depth of their work.

For Professor May Nwoye, those who have encountered her say her influence has grown largely from the latter.

In a series of tributes, friends, associates and former students have celebrated Nwoye as a scholar, international development expert, motivational speaker and accomplished writer whose simplicity belies her intellectual depth.

Odogwu Jimbaazz described her as a “rare breed”, praising her wisdom, intellect, integrity and modest approach to life. He noted that her international engagements and expertise in development economics have earned her recognition beyond Nigeria.

He also highlighted Nwoye’s literary work, saying she uses fiction to make complex economic and social issues accessible, weaving culture, conflict resolution and social realities into her stories.

Another tribute, by Barrister Eric Ngesionwu, recalled his days at the University of Benin, saying his association with Nwoye opened doors and earned him unusual respect.

“I totally agree, Professor Ifeoma is a brilliant mind and an amazing thinker,” another admirer wrote, praising her ability to translate academic theories into practical ideas capable of improving people’s lives.

Together, the tributes paint a picture of a woman whose influence, according to those who know her, extends well beyond the classroom, built on scholarship, character, mentorship and a commitment to human development.
