Nigeria Boosts Lagos Power Supply With New Apapa, Ijora Projects
Nigeria’s electricity transmission network has received a major boost in Lagos with the commissioning of two projects designed to increase bulk power capacity for some of the state’s busiest industrial and commercial corridors.
Minister of Power, Joseph Olasunkanmi Tegbe, on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, commissioned a new 2×60MVA, 132/33kV Gas Insulated Substation at Apapa and two 100MVA transformers at the Ijora Transmission Substation on Monday.
The Apapa facility replaces the ageing substation built in 1985 and adds about 96 megawatts of bulk power capacity to the area, which hosts Nigeria’s busiest ports, logistics hubs, manufacturers and businesses.
At Ijora, the two new transformers raise the substation’s capacity from 90MVA to 230MVA, equivalent to about 184MW, adding 112MW to transmission capacity serving Ijora, Costain, Oyingbo, Customs and adjoining communities.
Tegbe said the projects were part of the Federal Government’s plan to remove transmission bottlenecks and provide the electricity capacity needed to support President Tinubu’s ambition of building a $1 trillion economy.
The Apapa project was delivered with support from Japan’s Official Development Assistance programme and the Japan International Cooperation Agency, while the Ijora upgrade involved the World Bank, Shanghai Electric Group, the Transmission Company of Nigeria and other partners.
The Minister said the government would continue investing in transmission infrastructure nationwide to ensure available electricity can reach homes, businesses and industries more reliably.
