Efforts to promote gender inclusion and empower young girls through sports received a boost on Friday as the Federal Character Commission (FCC) pledged support for initiatives aimed at nurturing future female champions.

The Executive Chairman of the FCC, Hon. Hulayat Motunrayo Omidiran, gave the assurance while receiving the leadership of the Association of Former Female Athletes of Nigeria (AFFAN) at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja.

Omidiran reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to promoting equal opportunities through strategic partnerships and urged AFFAN to establish functional chapters across the 36 states and the FCT to strengthen mentorship and grassroots sports development.

She also pledged the Commission’s support for AFFAN’s programmes, noting that the FCC’s Gender and Persons with Disabilities Unit provides a strong platform for collaboration in advancing women empowerment and national integration.

Earlier, AFFAN Vice President, Hajiya Zainab Saleh, unveiled the Association’s proposed National Girl-Child Sports Development Programme, designed to discover young female talents while combining sports with mentorship, education and life skills.

She said the initiative would provide a national platform to inspire young girls and help former female athletes transition into meaningful careers where they can continue contributing to national development.
