Health Reforms Gain Momentum As FG Recruits 37,000 Workers, Expands PHCs
Nigeria’s long-standing healthcare challenges are driving a wave of reforms aimed at strengthening the workforce, expanding access to care and reducing the financial burden on vulnerable citizens.
The Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare says more than 37,000 health workers have been recruited into federal health institutions since 2023, while over 70,000 frontline workers have received training to improve service delivery.
Under the revised Basic Health Care Provision Fund, the Federal Government has also approved ₦32.9 billion to support more than 8,300 Primary Health Care Centres, with plans to expand coverage to about 13,000 facilities nationwide.
According to the Ministry, the reforms have contributed to over 80 million patient visits, while more than 21 million vulnerable Nigerians have accessed healthcare through the Vulnerable Groups Health Insurance Fund.
The government is also boosting local pharmaceutical production to improve access to affordable medicines, alongside investments in maternal and newborn health, disease surveillance, emergency preparedness and digital health systems.
The Ministry said 84 per cent of key performance indicators under the Presidential Health Sector Renewal Compact had been achieved as of the 2025 Joint Annual Review, while acknowledging that significant challenges remain.
It reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to building a stronger, more equitable and resilient health system that saves lives and reduces the physical and financial burden of healthcare on Nigerians.
