Nigeria Hosts Historic First UNI-MEI Regional Conference As RATTAWU Gains Global Recognition
In a significant boost for Nigeria’s labour movement, the Radio, Television, Theatre and Arts Workers Union (RATTAWU) is set to host the maiden Regional Conference of UNI Global Union’s Media, Entertainment and Arts sector (UNI-MEI) from 23 to 24 June 2026.
The landmark conference marks the first time the regional gathering will be held in Nigeria, underscoring the growing influence of RATTAWU within the global labour movement and the creative industries.
RATTAWU said the achievement reflects the strategic leadership of its President, Comrade Prince Emeka Kalu, whose administration has strengthened workers’ welfare, expanded international partnerships and elevated the union’s profile on the global stage.
The conference will bring together labour leaders, media professionals, policymakers and stakeholders from across the region to discuss emerging challenges and opportunities in the media, entertainment and creative sectors, including workers’ rights, digital transformation, collective bargaining and decent work.
Expected at the event are the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, as Special Guest, philanthropist and business leader High Chief Tochukwu Emmanuel Ezisi, and President of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), Dr Ike Neliaku, who will chair the conference.
Organisers say the gathering will strengthen regional cooperation among media and entertainment unions while providing a platform to advance policies that support sustainable growth, fair remuneration and job security for workers across Africa’s creative economy.
