As Nigeria marks 27 years of uninterrupted democratic rule, the Federal Government says early signs of economic recovery are emerging from reforms introduced under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

Speaking at a press conference as part of the activities commemorating the 2026 Democracy Day the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is committed to building a stronger, more inclusive, and more prosperous Nigeria.

‎Idris described Democracy Day as a significant occasion for reflecting on Nigeria’s democratic journey, celebrating the resilience of democratic institutions, and honouring the sacrifices of patriots who fought to entrench democratic governance in the country.

‎According to the Minister, it provides an opportunity for us to reflect on our democratic journey, celebrate the resilience of our institutions, and honour the sacrifices of patriots who stood firm in the struggle for democratic governance.

Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, who represented President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, said recent economic indicators point to gradual stabilisation, citing a Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth of 4.07 per cent in the fourth quarter of 2025 and 3.89 per cent in the first quarter of 2026.

While acknowledging that inflation and insecurity remain major challenges, he maintained that government reforms are beginning to yield measurable results.

“Government will never claim that every challenge has been solved. Inflation has been painful, though it is on a downward trend. Insecurity still threatens lives and livelihoods, but evidence shows that the country is moving in the right direction,” he stated.

Highlighting achievements under the Renewed Hope Agenda, the SGF disclosed that over three million vulnerable households have benefited from the Conditional Cash Transfer programme, while nearly one million Nigerians have accessed government-backed credit facilities.

He added that the Nigerian Consumer Credit Corporation (CreditCorp) has disbursed ₦37 billion in consumer loans, with more than half of beneficiaries accessing formal credit for the first time.

In the education sector, Akume revealed that over 1.058 million students have benefited from the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), with more than ₦184 billion committed to tuition and upkeep support.

The SGF also pointed to improvements in healthcare delivery, anti-corruption efforts and security operations, noting that over ₦50 billion in recovered assets had been redirected to support student financing initiatives.

He further highlighted Nigeria’s removal from the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) grey list in October 2025 as evidence of strengthened anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing measures.

Calling for unity and religious tolerance, Akume urged Nigerians to continue supporting democratic institutions and security agencies, stressing that the administration remains focused on delivering greater dividends of democracy ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The briefing formed part of activities commemorating Democracy Day, with ministers expected to provide sector-by-sector updates on the performance of the Federal Government.
