India Strengthens Media Ties With Free Eye Care Initiative For Nigerian Journalists

Recognising that journalists are the “eyes and ears” of society, the High Commission of India in Nigeria has organised a free eye care camp for media professionals in Abuja, reinforcing its commitment to supporting the welfare of journalists.

Speaking at the event, India’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, Ambassador Abhishek Singh, said the initiative was organised in response to a request by the Diplomatic Correspondents’ Association of Nigeria (DICAN) and in partnership with Skipper Eye-Q Hospital.

Singh described the media as the “fourth wheel of democracy”, noting that a vibrant press plays a critical role alongside the executive, legislature and judiciary in promoting accountability and good governance.

The High Commissioner said the free eye camp would enable journalists to undergo professional eye examinations and receive expert medical advice, stressing that good eyesight is essential for media practitioners who keep the public informed.

He reaffirmed India’s commitment to strengthening engagement with Nigerian journalists and pledged continued support for initiatives that promote media welfare and deepen the growing partnership between India and Nigeria.

Earlier in his remarks, the Chairman of DICAN, Fredrick Idehai, said the essence of the eye screening is to ensure that journalists get the needed information to to cater for their eyes.
