Kano Police Crack Down On Dangerous Highway Roller Skating

Roller skating may be a popular pastime among young people, but when it moves from designated recreational spaces to busy highways, it quickly becomes a deadly gamble.

Authorities in Kano are now sounding the alarm over a growing trend that is putting lives at risk.

The Kano State Police Command has warned youths and teenagers against roller skating on highways, bridges, road construction sites and other restricted areas across the state, describing the practice as a serious threat to public safety.

The Command expressed concern over the increasing number of juveniles skating on major roads and, in some cases, latching onto moving vehicles for speed and excitement, a dangerous act that has led to fatal and life-threatening accidents in other parts of the country.

According to the Police, highways are designed for vehicular traffic, while roller skates provide limited control and braking ability, significantly increasing the risk of collisions.

The absence of dedicated skating lanes on most roads and bridges under construction further heightens the danger to both skaters and motorists.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, warned all persons involved in the practice to desist immediately, stressing that anyone found obstructing traffic or endangering public safety would be arrested and prosecuted.

The Command also urged parents, guardians, schools and community leaders to caution children and wards against engaging in reckless skating activities.

Police spokesperson, CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, said the Command remains committed to protecting lives and maintaining public order, while encouraging residents to report dangerous skating activities to the nearest police station or through emergency channels.
