Democracy Day: FG Reaffirms Commitment To Unity, Democratic Governance

A quarter-century after Nigeria’s return to democratic rule, the Federal Government says sustaining democracy requires not only strong institutions but also national unity, citizen participation and collective responsibility.

The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening democratic governance, promoting national unity and addressing the nation’s challenges as Nigeria prepares to mark its 27th Democracy Day on June 12.

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, made the pledge on Friday during a special Juma’at prayer held as part of activities commemorating Democracy Day 2026.

Idris said the occasion offers Nigerians an opportunity to reflect on the sacrifices of democratic heroes, particularly Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola, whose struggle and commitment to the people’s mandate remain enduring symbols of Nigeria’s democratic journey.

According to the minister, Nigeria’s 27 years of uninterrupted democratic governance demonstrate the resilience of the country’s democratic institutions and the determination of citizens to uphold constitutional rule.

He urged Nigerians to renew their commitment to peaceful coexistence, dialogue and responsible citizenship, stressing that the nation’s strength lies in its diversity and collective resolve to build a more prosperous future.

The minister also prayed for God’s guidance for the nation’s leaders, protection for security personnel and lasting peace, unity and prosperity for Nigeria.
